To go along with my Baby Food with Blendtec post last week, I also wanted to share with you how we feed our toddler! I used to post weekly updates on Austin when he was a baby, and I am sad that I don’t post about him enough on here as I really want to use this as a journal to document our lives and as a space to inspire you and your families as well. 🙂 And again, I’m just trying to keep up with my goal of posting at least 1 Mommy/non-fashion related post a week.
Austin is almost 3 and a half years old and is saying words, singing songs, and growing up to be a big boy all too fast in front of my eyes. In the weekdays, he goes to daycare for the whole time we are at work, so once work and daycare are over, we spend about 3-4 hours with him each night before bedtime, of which dinner consists of half of that time, no joke. Austin is a SLOW eater, and that’s not a bad thing, but he gets distracted, and then by the end of the meal, most of his food is cold, but we make him eat it anyways. 😉 How else will he grow muscles, right??
For meals, we always feed Austin with this Re-Play Lorax-Inspired set which includes plates, cups and utensils in 3 fun colors and they are all stackable too. Austin is very ADAMANT about having different foods in each of the 3 plate compartments. Talk about being a threenager, if there is one compartment missing food, tantrum city here we go. We feed him milk, water, and juice occasionally and he is at the point where he doesn’t really need a lid and doesn’t generally have spills (although they do provide no-spill lids as an add on if preferred). And he is pretty comfortable using the fork and spoon all on his own. I love that the spoon is deep for gathering lots of food and everything has rounded edges so it’s safe. His knife skills still need a bit of work, but he is working on it. 😉
For most of his meals, we will feed him some carbs, like rice, noodles, mac n cheese or bread. We always like to have one meat option, like shredded chicken, pork cutlets, etc. And vegetables are also a must – he LOVES broccoli and green beans so that just makes us feel like we did something right, HA! We make a deal with him that if he finished his food, we will give him dessert. Dessert usually consists of fruit, crackers or cheese.
