A couple weeks ago when I was at my in-laws house, my mother-in-law happened to have a wreath making class at our house while I was there. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be one of her students as it’s been a long while since I’ve done any crafting. While the rest of the class made burlap wreaths with burlap flowers, I decided to make felt flowers instead. These wreaths are a nice addition to holiday decorations!
MATERIALS: styrofoam circle, burlap cut into strips, felt, twigs (optional, I didn’t actually use them in my wreath since they would have broken in my suitcase on the way home)
1. Wrap burlap tightly around the styrofoam circle, making sure to overlap between strips to cover up the ends (if you look at the right side, I didn’t do this, but I should have). If you forget, you can either put your flowers over that portion or use that side as the back.
2. Next you will need to make felt flowers (I’ve adapted a method I found on papernstitch, but you can easily Google “felt flower tutorials” and you’ll get a bunch of different flower types, I like these as well).
a. Cut felt into circle.
b. Make waves on the edges so when you are making your flowers there height of petals is varied.
c. Cut the felt into circle strips.
d. Starting with the outer end, start rolling the circles to create the flower, glue as you go.
e. Use the center circle piece to cover up the back of the flower.
f. Ta da! You are done. Now repeat with however many flowers you want to make and vary the sizes!
3. Glue flower rosettes on to wreath. Arrange them in any order you want!
4. Cut felt for leaves if you want. Add a bow to the top, and hang the wreath on your front door! 🙂
We’re not ones to go all out with the holiday decorating, especially if you compare our house to the neighbor’s houses. We’ve got this wreath hung up, a few lights strung on trees, and still have yet to put up and decorate the Christmas tree. I also hear it’s tradition to get a “baby’s first ornament”? I hadn’t heard of this but I don’t want to miss out on any special traditions for Austin!
